The 2008 whirlwind.

The 2008 whirlwind has begun.  I think I may be over my jet-lag, just in time to go back to Europe next week for the Winterberg Dirtmiester festival.  We will be launching the new R.E.D line of Rotwild bikes and partaking in the mandatory fun of the festival.  I am okay with that!

My last trip took me to Belgium, Germany and Italy.  For the first couple of weeks, I was supporting my girlfriend Willow Koerber in her quest for an Olympic berth.  She has never felt worse , so everyone send her some good vibes!  She did feel a bit better however, after we visited Adidas and they hooked us both up with sweet new product.  Aftter I left her to struggle alone in Spain, I lived it up in Italy at the Riva del Garda Festival.

I am lucky for a healthy liver and a fast metabolism because I ate and drank like Maximus (before he was captured).  Fueled by Italian cuisine, I railed my new Rotwild E1 and rocked some shuttles on my R.E.D. 2 with Wade Simmons, Holger Meyer, Andrew Shandro and my good buddy James.  The high action was captured by photographer Marco Toniolo.  We were also joined by a fleet of local shredders.

Somehow, I also found the time to visit the AXO headquarters in Treviso to discuss some cool new products in development.  Of course, I was treated to some spectacular Italian lunches.

This was a perfect trip to start the season.  The weather was spectacular, the vistas serene, and the dirt couldn’t have been better.  The trails are also pretty sweet here in Whistler.  I will be railing those trails until I head back to Frankfurt next week.  Stay tuned, here we go.

I’ve been doing some shuttling in Pemberton this week with some of the boys. The trails are in great condition, dry and dusty. You would never now that 20 minutes up the road Whistler still has some epic skiing.

The guys from VIO Inc have given me this head cam to use, so here is some footage of Cream Puff. Its not the best footage because its the first time I have used the camera, but its better than nothing.

Hey Everyone, in case you have been wondering what I have been up too, well here is a short update with some photos.

The winter in Whistler has been all time good for POWDER skiing and with my ability to travel, I have been getting a ton of great riding in as well. In North Carolina and a great trip to Costa Rica with the adidas freeride team(adiriders). I also went to CMH heli skiing with the Ride Guide TV crew to shoot a ski episode.

The bike photos are from Harooks and the ski shots are from Paul Morisson.

Fall Riding

This fall, a good friend of mine who also happens to be my web master, Jimmi Mackintosh, had the chance to share in some wicked late season fall riding with photographer Marco Toniolo.

The legendary Whistler Bike Park has 2 cousins just a short drive away that are unsung hero’s. If you are lucky enough to be around after the closing or before the opening of the bike park, you might just get to experience some of the best riding in the world.

Half way between Vancouver and Whistler lies the slowly evolving logging/mill town of Squamish, BC. It is more famously known by the rock climbing community for the Chief, the 2nd largest granite wall in North America. However the far more interesting parts of Squamish are it’s sick mountain bike trails, which are the perfect marriage between Whistler style trails and the stunts of the North Shore. The Gateway to the Diamond Head provincial park is the home of these easy access truck or even car shuttle trails including 19th Hole, Peanuts Wild Ride, Blow out your Candles, Ditch Pig and many more clever names. The trails are fast and furious riddled with jumps, berms, drops and of course unique stunts.

When she isn’t on the World cup XC podium, Willow Koerber likes to Freeride in BC too. Who wouldn’t. With Schley.

Pemberton, just 20 minutes north of Whistler, is my favorite riding stash for spring, fall and rainy day riding. Much dryer, more open and the beginning transition from Coastal mountain rain forest to semi arid desert are some of the sweetest trails on earth. Cop Killer, Jim Jam, Mackenzie Cruise, Wild Bill, Res-er-rectum and Cream Puff are only a few of these trails that are best ridden when wet.

Just like skiing on a powder day the real condition hounds wait for Pembi to be just right and assemble a team of bros that just want to pin it powder day style.

The riding is a mixture of Whistler and Kamloops, which for me feels like home. The flow, vertical, jumps and unique terrain are what make riding there truly awesome. As you rip down the compact sandy trails and roost out of the berms, you constantly get visuals of Mount Currie, an 8000 foot peak that stares you down as you descend sometimes almost 3000 feet.

If you ever get the chance and have ridden every inch of Garbanzo and know A-Line so well you can ride it with you eyes closed, get out into the backcountry of Whistlers relatives and put your riding skills to the real test. No patrol, signs or tourists. Just you and the mountains. Pemberton and Squamish are the hidden treasures.

Richie set off this week on yet another epic mountain biking adventure!

This trip, Richie is off to Peru to ride in the worlds premier undiscovered mountain bike destination - The Andes. These are the worlds longest mountain range and offer incredible descents, where you can ride from altitudes of over 10,000 ft all the way to the Pacific Ocean.

Richie is joined on this trip by good friend Robbie Bourdon, Cory - Ride Guide producer, Paul Morrison - renowned sports photographer and led by Mike from Scared Ride.

It is going to be an unforgettable adventure mountain biking the ancient Inca Trails which are more than 500 years old, averaging about 3000m vertical a day!

Check back for pictures of the guys riding deep canyons, big valleys, impressive glaciers and a story or two on what they get up to ;-)

Round Up

Richie was just back in Whistler for a week after a huge tour in Europe.

The trip started four days at Euro bike trade show where the beer was flowing and people were checking out all of the new products. Richie’s highlight was the new ROWILD R.E.D. bikes that he helped design. Next were the World Championships in Fort William Scotland, followed by a week in Maribor, Slovenia for the World Cup finals. Originally there was another trip planned for Cypress, but unfortunately the event was cancelled. The good news was that it meant Richie was able to come home and rip it up on some of the Whistler trails.

The other day, Richie was on a photo shoot with all time action sports photographer, Paul Morrison. The location will remain secret, but it is a newly built, totally wicked trail. The riding in Whistler, Pemby and Squamish really is all time!

Now Richie is off at Interbike in Las Vegas for the North American bike trade show. This will be followed up by another week of riding in Whistler with his friends. Then on Oct 11 he will fly down to Moab, Utah to ride and shoot with old friends Scott Markewitz and Brian Lopes. They will also be joined by Chris Vandine for the first time.

The Final stop of the season will be another incredible journey with freeride legend Wade Simmons and the Ride Guide TV show. The event to mark the end of another amazing season!

Richie’s year with new sponsors Rotwild and Continental, has been awesome. All the bikes are riding well and he is looking forward to developing the new products for next season.

Check out the new photos we’ve upload from the last few weeks.

Take it easy and keep on riding!

Crankworx 2007

Crankworx 2007 was once again at a higher level then ever before. Featuring the best racers in the world and the most skilled stylish Freeriders out there. It was a true testament to Whistler’s superior facilities that 3 of the youngest Free riders in the World step into the realm of the best and gave them a real run for it. Alex Pro, Brandon Semenuk and Kyle Macdonald, all local 16 year olds were the high light of the event for me.

The evening activities, the addition of Women’s works and the Dual Slalom were more pieces of the puzzle that make Crankworx truly stands on it’s own as the best bike festival in the world.
